Scandinavian Cuties is the creative design of Peggy Dow. Peggy is of Swedish and Norwegian descent and takes a keen interest in the traditions of her heritage.
Her “cutie” dolls originated as a fundraising idea for her children’s Scandinavian Club, Sverige Barnen. Searching for fun ways to raise money for the club, she thought of making a Swedish and Norwegian doll in their folk costumes. The first time she put them out was at the Chicago Botanical Gardens for their Swedish Days. She had 2 Swedish girls, 2 Norwegian girls and 1 boy of each. They sold right away so from then on, she has been creating them. They have expanded to dolls of the 3 other Scandinavian countries, Finland, Denmark and Iceland, as well as a Viking, St. Lucia, Pilgrims, a Nativity, Santa & Mrs. Claus, Ireland, Germany, Poland and Italy. She enjoys seeing them each evolve into their unique costumes.
Peggy also takes glass ornaments and adheres the flags of different countries to them along with sparkling glitter to make beautiful glass glitter ornaments of countries around the world. She has also made these for a variety of sports.
During a trip to Sweden, she visited the wooden horse factory where she learned about making and painting the Dala Horses. She decided to try to create a dala horse napkin holder like the ones she saw. With her father’s help, he was able to make a dala horse napkin holder and has since showed her how to do it. Now she and her daughter Jacqui have been making them all themselves.
Peggy has gotten much diversified and has been creating items such as soft sculpture baskets, quilted purses, quilted sports bags, fashion headbands, fashion glass plates, wood sled ornaments and other items. She enjoys displaying her items for sale at craft shows and has grown so much that she can’t do it herself. Fortunately, her sister and mother graciously help her out and they have a great time doing it!
Feel free to call or email her and of course, visit her website. Special orders are welcome. It’s great fun for her to try something new. You can see her items in May at the Norwegian Parade in Park Ridge, Illinois, in June and September at Vasa Park in South Elgin, Illinois, and in November at the Grove in Glenview, Illinois. She occasionally does other events so you never know where you might find her!
